Im Sommer 1938 reiste der deutsche Maler und Landschaftsfotograf Alfred Ehrhardt mit seiner Frau Lotte nach Island, um zu fotografieren und zu filmen. Ehrhardt, ehemaliger Bauhaus-Schüler und einer der wichtigsten Fotografen der Neuen Sachlichkeit, war auf der Suche nach den Kunstformen der Natur, den Urformen der Kunst. Der Film folgt den Exkursionen Alfred Ehrhardts und geht mit seinen großartigen Bildern der Frage nach, die schon Cees Noteboom sich stellte: “Etwas in der Natur, das nicht bewusst so gemacht worden war, strahlt eine große Schönheit aus. Aber wessen Schönheit ist es nun? Die der Natur, oder die der Aufnahme des Fotografen?” Die Natur vor uns entdeckt das vergessene Werk Alfred Ehrhardts wieder, dessen Haltung im Zeitalter der globalen Umweltkrise wieder aktuell wird.

Niels Bolbrinker’s new film deals with mankind’s relationship with nature and her images, centering around the life and work of Alfred Ehrhardt, the renowned photographer and filmmaker.

In the summer of 1938, the German painter and landscape photographer Alfred Ehrhardt traveled to Iceland with his wife Lotte to photograph and film. Ehrhardt, a former Bauhaus student and one of the most important photographers of the New Objectivity movement, was in search of the art forms of nature, the archetypes of art. The film follows Alfred Ehrhardt's excursions and, with his magnificent images, explores the question that Cees Noteboom already asked himself: "Something in nature that was not deliberately made that way radiates great beauty. But whose beauty is it? That of nature, or that of the photographer's shot?" Nature before us rediscovers the forgotten work of Alfred Ehrhardt, whose attitude is becoming topical again in the age of the global environmental crisis.
